Scientific testing on animals increased again last year, largely as a result of a rise in genetic modification experiments, figures from the Home Office show.
The number of licensed animal testing procedures was just over 3.2 million in 2007, a rise of some 6% on 2006.
The Home Office, which regulates animal testing, said the increase in procedures was mainly due to more breeding of genetically altered animals.
In 2006 the number of procedures rose 4% to exceed 3 million for the first time since 1991, again largely due to GM experimentation.
