More than 100 firefighters are this evening tackling a major fire at Camden Market in London. The fire was still spreading at about 8.30pm and London Fire Brigade said people may be trapped inside.
The fire broke out on Chalk Farm Road just after 7pm. The area was crowded with shoppers visiting market stalls and revellers in bars. The area attracts hundreds of thousands of people every day.
The fire was believed to have started in homes near the market, but salls and shops rapidly caught fire, with flames threatening an overland railway line and trains were disrupted. A pub, the Hawley arms, has been badly damaged. Flames are leaping up to 30ft in the air.
"Overlooking the flames, they seem to engulf the whole Camden Market and stables," said one eyewitness.
