thumbsup 'Elywood' may be best location

ELY Cathedral is in the running for a prestigious regional award for the best film and TV location.

It follows the city's success in attracting three big-name Hollywood productions to Ely in just under two years.

Cathedral staff will attend the Creative East Awards in Norwich on Thursday, where the cathedral has been nominated as the Best Film & TV location in the East of England.

The cathedral was the main external location for the film Elizabeth: The Golden Age, where the cast and crew spent 11 days on site filming some key scenes in the summer of 2006.

It saw some of Hollywood's biggest stars, including Cate Blanchett, Geoffrey Rush and Clive Owen, rub shoulders with many Ely residents who were recruited as extras.

And Tinseltown's finest were back in Elywood in 2007 when The Other Boleyn Girl, starring Natalie Portman, Scarlett Johansson and Eric Bana, filmed in the cathedral for the medieval drama, which is now in cinema.

And only last Thursday, Liam Neeson and Atonement star Romola Garai visited the city to film The Other Man, a modern-day drama.

Lesley Ann Thompson, the cathedral's marketing manager, was delighted by the nomination: "It is a great privilege to have the cathedral recognised in this way.

I should love to see inside, I have seen the outside briefly as we drove past once on the way to some where else. Never got back
