Default Nuclear Meltdown

And here's me worrying about how much is wasted on the Olympics.....

BBC NEWS | Science/Nature | Nuclear clean-up costs 'to soar'

Quote "The cost of cleaning up the UK's ageing nuclear facilities, including some described as "dangerous", looks set to rise above £73bn, the BBC has learned. "

Can't see the problem. All GB will do is create another tax.

The cost is relative.......
An event that lasts two/three weeks (?) and the production of electricity for a period of fifty odd years.
Wonder how it compares to the price of Oil for the same supply over the same period ?

And the price of securing waste that will remain DEADLY for a HALF life of 20 to 40 THOUSAND years???

How many deaths caused by exploding oil refinaries?

How many MILLION estimated for Tschernobyl? Long Island? The Calder Hall leaks in the 60s?

I can't put my finger RIGHT on it, but with nuclear power I have this feeling that they are teetering on a tight rope during a huricane, between "Oh aye, that'll do", and "We haven't got a bleeding CLUE what we are on about, but lets try something anyway".

I mean they readjust the reccomended safety level for radiation exposure every time the cat farts.

They are just like a 5 year old with it's first .44 magnum.

I would be interested to know the comparitive risks involved with Nuclear as opposed to Fossil fuels.

Has anybody calculated the "Costs" of the two energy sources ?
I am not talking purely about the price in dollars, pounds, euros or drachmas, but the enviromental costs too.
Oil being the volatile liquid it is, has to be transported in secure containers, or along thousands of miles of flimsy pipelines. Every now and then we have leakages of fumes and liquid, resulting in massive explosions and major enviromental damage.Plus the amount of manufactured hard ware to contain this bulky energy source, all contribute to that cost.

Nuclear is almost pure in comparison, even taking into account the disasters we know about.

I agree. There is only one fly in the nuclear ointment, the human factor.

In addition, nuclear power stations, while releasing considerable waste heat (Which could probably be re-used), produce no green-house gasses of any kind. (If you believe in green house gasses)
