Talking Drivers muddled by satnav directions prove costly for Network Rail

NETWORK RAIL has blamed drivers following satellite navigation (satnav) instructions down narrow roads for a surge in damage to bridges and crossings.

According to the company’s research, lorries have caused £15m-worth of damage in the past year by striking low or narrow bridges after being directed under them by their in-cab systems.

There have been several incidents, meanwhile, of cars turning down railway tracks on level crossings after mistaking them for the roads just past the crossing that their satnavs have told them to take. This has led to several near-misses.

The railway infrastructure company said the number of bridges hit by lorries travelling on inappropriate roads had doubled in the last decade to 2,000 a year.

We had to find a shop in Norwich today. That was interesting via SatNav. There a dimension missing. High, whether it be you or it, is not recognised.

We've had some fun with the SatNav. On our way back home from Church my husband decided to go the SatNav way last week and instead of telling us to turn right onto the main road it had us turn left, then next right, right, and right and then left! Just basically taking us round a block across the other side of the road and bringing us to the exact same crossroads from the opposite direction! Totally mad.

use co-pilot live on o2 xda orbit, satnav is great if you don't know where a street is however the grey matter does better with road no's & junction no's

I find sat nav invaluable. Being a JCB driver with jobs that are on a day to day basis, without it, trying to navigate round north, north west and west London can be a nightmarebootshak

Thats easy to solve - give them all maps again. Failing that use public transport and let someone else take the strain!!!
