Ministers are to build eight new nuclear power stations across England, the Daily Telegraph can disclose. The new nuclear plants will mainly be based alongside existing facilities and are expected to be constructed over the next decade. New planning laws will be used to fast-track approval for the nuclear plants which Gordon Brown believes are crucial in reducing Britain's dependency on fossil fuels. However, the plans are likely to anger people living close to the new sites whose properties will now be close to nuclear plants for much of the century. Many environmentalists are also opposed to the plans. Earlier this year, the Government announced that it was committed to building a new generation of nuclear power stations to replace the existing facilities. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/earth/main.jhtml?xml=/earth/2008/07/13/eanuclear113.xml I have no particular objection. It is an excellent source of power. It has one tiny flaw..........The Human Factor. Waste of course, is another thing.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I've said all along that nuclear power was the only viable option, we just need to build the power stations carefully and not by the lowest bidder. My comment was on the fact that in a mere 6 months (I think it is, isn't it?) this fine, upstanding government has done a COMPLETE about face (yet again) on their "principled" stand against all uses of nuclear fission... Wasn't it these arrogant twats who were saying that wind and wave was ALL they were considering up until their "re-think" just a few months ago? H.

You're absolutely right, they are swapping feet faster than Fred Astaire. Leaving these contracts to competitive tender is risky for two reasons. 1. Cheap isn't the best as safety is always the first victim when costs are cut (I'm sure SP will concur given her other half works in aviation). 2. The favoured tender will always be the one who offers the biggest brown envelope and so always ends up costing the most because of "budgetary overruns".

I am saying nothing, there is no point. I wont be around when the planet dies and I have no family so why should I care anymore what they do to destroy the world. Our art group works with the kids from Chernobyl they come over and visit, they know what nuclear power can provide.
