Talking Benefit shake-up 'revolutionary'

Benefit claimants could be forced to pick up litter and erase graffiti under plans to be unveiled by ministers.
The Welfare Green Paper is set to include proposals to force those unemployed for more than two years to work full-time in the community.
Incapacity benefit will be scrapped as part of a scheme to get more people claiming the benefit back to work.
Minister James Purnell says the plans will "transform lives". The Tories say many of the ideas are theirs. This shake-up will apply to all 4.5 million people on out-of-work benefits, but is expected to impact most on those on Jobseekers Allowance.

The only reason they're doing it is because they realise they can't afford the bill anymore.

Get rid of some (sorry, all) of the freeloaders and the bill would go down even more.

I think you'll find, in the not to distant future, that these people will then cease to be classed as "Unemployed" and thus this government will claim they've erradicated unemployment...

Looking at the bare bones of what they're suggesting in effect, they're going to ask people to 'work for dole'. Sounds great, but then we have to consider legislation. The fact is, a lot of long term unemployed are unemployable. So that means we, the taxpayer, will have to pay the minimum wage for them to perform basic tasks, thus making the government an even bigger (possibly the biggest) employer in Britain. This will make the labour market even more stretched as far as wages go, because no doubt all the employers who have contracts with the jobcentre will be referred these people.

I think the time limit expectation was more reasonable, and the fact they're now moving all the people they moved off unemployment benefits to incapacity (to hide unemployment figures) back to unemployment benefits is a bit laughable.

Anyway, as I said before, if they'd had the mind to do this 10 years ago we would be billions better off now, or less in the red anyway.

I wonder if the planned timing for this is just before the next general election?

I don't think they could plan their way out of a shoe box.

I've got a better idea. Give the unemployed double-barrels and have them hunt nu labour...

One would think that "job seekers allowance " would be given only to those actively seeking employment. It does not take hat long to find work of some sort, so by its very nature should not be paid for more than a couple of months.
The arses in Westminster allow these abuses to continue and wonder why they have a problem. Madness.
