| Every petrol pump in Britain will be prepay by 2011 because of the rise in fuel theft, say industry bosses. The soaring cost of unleaded and diesel has seen an increase in instances of people driving off from forecourts without paying. Petrol retailers say their fuel theft bill has risen by several million pounds. The prepay system, where drivers have to swipe a debit or credit card at the pump before they can get any petrol, is already used widely in the U.S. The amount the driver has spent is automatically deducted from the swiped card, making it impossible not to pay for filling up. Some UK forecourts already have the prepay system, particularly those at supermarkets. Every petrol pump 'will be prepay by 2011' | Mail Online Already standard in the Staes I believe |
Time for another "good idea, bad idea"
Good idea, making it difficult for the forecourt 'dine n dash' crime to continue by implementing prepay pumps.
Bad Idea, see above and consider this scenario;
As of 2007, there are 9,271 petrol stations in the U.K, Each one employing around 8 -10 people, primarily unskilled and unable to work in other sectors, then the petrol stations go automated putting (potentially) 92,710 people out of work.
In european countries and the god forsaken USA we know that automats do work and crime is prevented, but we also know that unemployment and untrained figures are totally different to those in the UK, heres what i propose - make one automatic gas station for each town, and increase the work force by reviving the position of forecourt attendant who will check how much petrol you want, take your money/charge your card via a portable keypad (not unlike the wireless bluetooth devices we see in shops and bars) and the machine then works in unison with the pump to dispense the pre charged amount of petrol/diesel, the added bonus would be that if the customer stays in the car, there can be a dramatic reduction in the amount of accidents on the forecourt and in reducing accidents we increase the number of employed people and make customer service more efficient.
is this a future hard to imagine?
