The Government's decision to increase the stamp duty threshold to £175,000 will have a far bigger impact on homebuyers in northern regions than ones in the south, Britain's biggest mortgage lender said today. Halifax said 75% of all homes bought in the north during the year to the end of June were for less than £175,000. Around 72% of property sales in the north west and Yorkshire and the Humber would also have been exempt from the tax if the new threshold had been in place. By contrast only 12% of the homes that changed hands in London during the period did so for less than £175,000. Southern homeowners will lose out under new stamp duty plans, claims Halifax | Mail Online My borther and sister -in-law bought a huge three story house in Macclesfield for a paltry £139,000. My daughter in London, can't even afford a small flat.

It is a great area where you are Sweet, I love it over there too. It is well north of Watford so counts as northern to a lot of my mates. I am sure they think you just drop of the edge of the world, north of watford.

The thing is, you drive north of Watford and nearly all the sign posts simply say 'To the North'. Easy to see where we get confused! It always amused me. Never seen one on the way back down saying 'To the South'. Anyway, back to house prices. You'd be lucky do get a studio in Hackney for leass than £150k I reckon (one vaguely worth having anyway). The best I could get where I live is a two bed flat in a high rise council flat (approx. 20 floors) for £100k. Nice. Really need at least £190 to get anything half decent. |

Our first was a 4 bed 5 recpt house with front and rear gardens in SW18, hate to think what that would cost to buy now. I know we would never be able to afford it.
