Lloyds TSB deal for HBOS: Thousands of jobs go

Thousands of jobs are set to go when Lloyds TSB completes its £12.2bn rescue of HBOS as the new bank faces Britain's first recession in two decades.
Although rumours that 40,000 jobs could go were dismissed this morning as too high by Lloyds chief executive Eric Daniels, he added that the bank will be seeking to save £1bn a year in costs.
The deal to save Britain's biggest mortgage lender was thrashed out over the past 48 hours against a backdrop of HBOS's tumbling share price. Shareholders in HBOS will recieve 0.83 Lloyds shares.

Mr Daniels, who is now the most powerful man in British banking, wouldn’t say how many staff will go or how many branches will close.
