Thousands of homebuyers have joined an online revolt against stamp duty as chancellor Alistair Darling prepares to unveil his first full budget on Wednesday. More than 10,000 people have signed mortgage broker Charcol’s ‘stamp out stamp duty’ petition since its launch in November. The figures were released as Halifax, Britain’s biggest lender, revealed that first-time buyers now pay stamp duty nearly everywhere in the south. The average first-timer paid the tax in 99 per cent of local authorities in the south in 2007, compared with 42 per cent in the north. Beleaguered first-timers pay the higher 3 and 4 per cent rates in nearly two-thirds of London boroughs, and the average bill in Greater London was £8,675 – an astonishing £6,807, or 364 per cent, more than in 2002. For the country as a whole, the average bill was £1,751 – still £791 or 82 per cent more than in 2002. Stamp Duty Petition - Charcol If you are struggling, sign!
