Thumbs down £7m on spin to convince us money is NOT being wasted

More than £7million of Lottery money earmarked for good causes has been spent on ‘media spin’ after rows over ‘loony’ handouts to support illegal immigrants with terrorist links and Peruvian guinea pig farmers, it was revealed last night.

The Tories pledged to scrap the National Lottery Promotions Unit (NLPU) following the Government’s disclosure of the cost of the propaganda campaign to convince the public that their ticket money is not being wasted.

The unit, largely made up of Labour spin doctors, was set up four years ago by former Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell in the wake of a series of rows over controversial Lottery handouts including:

• A £340,000 grant for the National Coalition of Anti-Deportation Campaigns, which was found to have supported two Palestinians convicted at the Old Bailey of planting bombs near Jewish targets in London in 1994.

• £220,000 to install underfloor heating, toys, curtains and snout-operated showers in luxury .

• £295,000 to research the breeding of fatter guinea pigs to feed Peruvians.

• £395,000 to boost consumer rights in Eastern Europe.

• £400,000 for non-governmental groups in Bulgaria.

And children's hospices closing as they were refused the lottery money they relied on.

The Bulgarian one is doubtlessly a scam. They've actually had their EU funding completely stopped because of corruption. In EU terms that's really quite an achievement, Russian mafia run that place. Why isn't the UK lottery supporting loony UK things instead?

Silly me, and there was I complaining about lottery money being spent on the national opera house, the fact that money is spent in this way on spin doctors doesn't surprise me at all, after all the present government has always been smoke and mirrors

I think you've hit the nail squarely on the head, this government has built a national "culture of spin" in which it appears not to matter who is misled as long as the spin is of good quality, or that messages are put out on "good days to bury bad news". Let's face it, she only lost her job, not because she said this, but because someone reported she'd said it.

I just wish someone would stand up and have the intestinal fortitude to TELL THE TRUTH!

If they are going to take this money and spend it elsewhere (i.e. not where they said it was going) then just 'fess up and SAY SO! Then we can fire up the BBQ, and roast them alive, and get someone running the lottery according to what it was meant for.
