Default District Council levies £1,000 charge for home extensions

Families are being charged a £1,000 “bedroom tax” to extend their homes under a new interpretation of town hall planning rules.
Ministers say that there is nothing they can do to stop local authorities levying the charge, giving the go-ahead to all councils to follow the example of Purbeck, Dorset, which has raised £90,000 from the tax.
Under the 1990 Town and Country Planning Act, developers are required to help with the cost of roads and other local facilities when they build housing or office developments. But this is the first time that the Act has been applied to residents who are trying to improve their homes.
Purbeck District Council said that it needed the money to pay for roads and public transport, adding that many other councils were looking at the tax “very closely and seriously”.

So, if you were thinking of doing it, think again...

What's the point going to work... Why don't I just give my employers my council's bank details and go hang myself???

It seems to me that the treasury is so cash strapped that local government upwards have to try and invent new cruel and unusual ways to extort money from people. But ministers saying that they can't do anything about it is a total bollocks. Dept. of constitutional affairs has the power to overule any local authority on virtually any decision.

There is a much easier way to solve the problems of the presures on the public purse, and to get these t**sers snouts out of the trough....

Don't pay them.

Seriously, council seats never used to be paid positions, why are they now?

Given that, why should MP's get paid, certainly they shouldn't be paid so much more than the national "average wage"... They are meant to be serving us... do you pay a servant more than you earn? I think not... More importantly you only pay them for the work they do well, and more importantly CORRECTLY.

Because the common attitude of these people seems to be generally "we can afford it".

Not any bloody more.
