Default The Romans

Being an avid reader, I have in the last year been reading up on the Roman Empire, fiction and non fiction.
I never realized how much they contributed to Democracy. Our whole foundation of democracy is based on the Roman system.
They where an extremely brutal race, but the soldiering was without equal. No wonder then that the Republic/Dictatorship lasted some 600 years.
With this thread I was hoping to generate some discussion. If you have no interest, that is no problem, just wanted to see if anyone was like minded. :-)

Two area's were I am totally lacking, are History and Geography. At school, I found them dreary beyond comprehension, and just would not do them. I regret it now.

Getting there with Geopgraphy.

I was a total idiot at school, was semi illiterate when I left at fifteen. Now I wish that I had done better, (don't we all) I am now absolutely fascinated by all the subjects that I thought where not necessary.
I was of the opinion, maths, geography, science, what will all this crap do for me when I leave school.
Little did I realize, in the eyes of future employers that it was not the content, but the ability to take on board what you have been taught, also with your ability to learn that is the most important thing.
It was certainly easier to find well paid jobs in 1965 without qualifications, but not so now.
Anyway, keep at it Sweets. You can learn something every single day.

Ha ha I am still trying to get my head around the basics of quantum physics.
Unfortunately for me, my seventeen year old son, ties me in knots about science. But it does not stop me being fascinated.

I must research that one terrywit, I have to admit to being so immersed in Roman History that I never gave the Greeks a thought.
It will teach me not to shootFrom the hip again with unfounded comments.

Quite like history, but havent got as far back as The Romans, did cover it at school, but as most people at the age of 12/13 found history rather boring.
Am more into the Medieaval period at present.
