East End of London fight City developers

From the Huguenots of the 17th century through to the Bengalis in more recent times, the East End has long been a haven for London's immigrants.
But now residents say that its social and historic fabric is threatened by arrivals from the City. The financial district is to encroach on the cultural hub, with high-rise towers proposed for the fringes of Shoreditch. Amid dismay at the current proliferation of trendy shops and bars, a campaign to preserve the area has gathered force, and a petition has attracted 6,500 signatures.

It is feared that the sterility of the City will spoil the area's diversity. Patrick Hughes, the artist, said:
“They're so boring, aren't they? In their awful suits and with their mindless skyscrapers. It's free and easy here. We're just outside the City walls and now the City is coming to take us over.”

Eastender born and bred, I can tell you there are very few Eastenders left, they all moved out. In our close, there are four Eastender families and no one has even the first inclination to even visit the east end again.

The east end people have been pushed out. The east end is a ghetto.

Oh what a shame! Gone are the dirty smelly streets filled with non-english speaking to be replaced by resplendent glass edifices to Capitalism.
