Cities in northern England such as Liverpool, Sunderland and Bradford are "beyond revival" and residents should move south, a think tank has argued.
Policy Exchange said current regeneration policies were "failing" the people they were supposed to help.
A mass migration to London, Cambridge and Oxford would stop them becoming "trapped" in poorer areas, it said.
One of the report authors acknowledged it may be seen as "barmy". A Liverpool MP called it "utter nonsense".
Policy Exchange is one of the most influential right-of-centre think tanks and it has been credited with much of the fresh thinking behind the revival of the Conservative Party under David Cameron. Its report comes as Mr Cameron embarks on a two-day tour of marginal constituencies in the north of England, including areas around Liverpool.

Hubby and I discuss this a lot. When you see video's of kids jumping on cars and throwing bricks at people's houses, in is never in London. It does not happen down south.

I believe this is yet another case of media bias... It absolutely does happen down south but I bet it doesn't happen (on its own) up north all that much...

I think the thrust of the study done by LSE was to show that these cities are in decline whereas the Southeast is on its way up. It was the other way around until about 50 years ago, when we used to actually make things, all the industries were up there, so people actually migrated up to the North to make a penny. Same with Wales.

Now the situation is reversed. The study (I haven't read it) according to a geek from LSE on telly last night contains evidence so they say, that these places are a lost cause now despite heavy regeneration money being spent from the EU and Darrrn Saaath (our council tax) by implication.

In effect, they're just saying the tables have turned.

yes theres only a couple of WW2 bomb sites which became car parks left, & some of the mills on wincolmlee which have been unused for 30/40 years are being knocked down for "yuppie" apartments......(yes we are 30 yrs behind)
