there are somethings that individual kids, and some grown ups have a problem with, mine was numbers,I was useless at math, just couldn't grasp it. when I got to senior school and had geometry and trigonometry, I was lost.
I could read before I went to school inspite of being dyslexic, because I see words as pictures I recognize them, but they could be spelled wrong I wouldn't know as long as the picture looked right.

but their brain has to be at the correct level to understand it, not all children reach the level at the same age.

we are forever going on about age and stage appropriate, because age and stage of development arent the same.... some 5 year olds can read, some cant.

I am numerically dyslexic, figures hold no meaning for me at all.

I think the learning ability of children is greatly underestimated.
It is the manner in which they are taught that is at fault.

there are many different ways to teach children, i like the sound of montesorri, was thinking of doing the extra training for it, its very hands on a child led so they learn at their own pace and have proper time to absorb it not the 'i talk you listen' there is in many schools.

Children learn from the time they exit the womb.
They taste and touch everything.
All they need is the will and encouragement to learn, and a good teacher does just that.

my hand writing is piss poor, I have no idea what age I could read or write?

I do recall the step from junior to secondary school & how far my old school mates where in front of the masses in every subject, the look on the math teachers face when the paper where marked I came in joint 2nd in the year, also most a shocked as the temp who found a turd in her handbag

can't think of much from school, 1st few weeks at the zoo, cock of school punched his mate, the fact he was the other side of plate glass window did not seem to matter, nailing text books to the benchs for doss,

profesionally i wouldnt worry about reception class, most childcare experts think children shouldnt be taught to read and write till aged 7 when the brain is better prepared for it.....

also dont blame the parents, this should be covered in nursery.

ty could read and write before he went to school as well
hmm

Wrong, wrong, wrong to assume that kids that can't read or write their own name by the age of five come from parents who don't care. Dyslecixs have always been given a hard time but unfortunatetly dyslexics's do exist. But who am I to argue with the great teachers of this site? My kids were well educated with books and reading so if they couldn't write their name at five they were thick? Sorry but you are trying to put all kids at the same level and they are not. Some kids will be great at English and some at Maths and maybe even some who will be great at everything. You just can't put them in boxes for certain ages and say they must be good at everything!! Why not just encourage kids in their better subjects?
