Default One in seven children cannot write own name

Almost 80,000 five-year-olds struggle to hold a pen properly or form basic words such as "mum", "dad" and "cat".
Thousands more cannot say the alphabet or count to ten.
The disclosure is made in a Government analysis of 556,000 children at the end of the foundation stage before they move into Year One.
Fewer than half reached Government targets in all six areas of early development, including personal skills, communication and language, basic numeracy, physical development and creativity.
Some 49 per cent were competent in all areas - a four point rise on last year but almost the same as levels achieved in 2005.
It means the majority of children will start compulsory primary school this month not fully prepared. The figures are short of Government targets.

One in seven children cannot write own name after year at school - Telegraph

Two reasons:

a. Lousy Parents
b. English is not their first language.

I could read and write and do my alphabet, long before I even went to school. Same goes for my two daughters.

thats because one in seven children are called mohammed, aaliyah, khadija (etc) not as easy to write as emma, harry or sarah...

profesionally i wouldnt worry about reception class, most childcare experts think children shouldnt be taught to read and write till aged 7 when the brain is better prepared for it.....

also dont blame the parents, this should be covered in nursery.

ty could read and write before he went to school as well

Well, my two daughters and I learnt at home, I think it's highly important to start there. It gives a child so much confidence if he/she has already learnt what they are being taught.

I agree SP, a parent is a childs first educator...
like everything else tho, reading is one of those things that some kids cant grasp easily

Unless they're dyslexic, or have some other kind of disability that might cause difficulties, I fail to see why the vast majority of kids cant write their own name by 5 years old.

Children should have books around them from birth IMO, most kids can be taught to read before going to school
