Cool Flags fluttered over village for a century.....

Flags that fluttered over village parties for a century snagged in health and safety red tape

For more than a century, the inhabitants of Hatfield Broad Oak have marked their special occasions with strings of bunting.
In recent decades, the colourful flags have become an integral part of the annual village festival.
But from this year, they will flutter no more.
The bunting has become tangled up with health and safety red tape, and has become too costly - and complicated - for festival organisers to erect.
The annual event in the Essex village, which includes a craft fair, a dance and a dog show and ends today with a ten kilometre run, raises about £10,000 a year for local groups and charities.
Parish councillor Leigh Trevitt, 40, who
has lived in Hatfield Broad Oak for 15 years, said the whole village is furious that it could no longer be marked with bunting.
Mr Trevitt, director of a paper company, said an unknown person had complained about the flags to authorities.

I don't understand how some 'unknown' can make a complaint. How does H&S show that there was a legitimate complaint?

H&S should be FORCED to produce evidence that these things they ban have EVER been known to cause injury or fatality, BEFORE they are allowed to ban them.

" Six Pensioner killed out right by a quarter of an ounce of falling bunting" would do in this case.

what would they have done if the villagers had flown them anyway, an unnamed different person attaching the bunting at each place, without knowledge of the organisers.
Who would the authorities prosecute, who could they pursue.
Do like we do, dont ask just do it, stuff the suits, let them figure out what happened after the event.

Too simple a solution Poppy, that would take some simple gumption.

Alas we are all conditioned to tow the line, after reading the manual and taking the risk assessment course, all afraid to make a judgement without involving a higher authority, who are deemed to know better.
Everybody says "What if we did that, and something terrible happened ?"

Then we blame some people we call "Them" for taking away our rights and freedoms.

There will now follow a list of examples from the lemmings sector, proving that I am wrong in this assessment......

Perfect example recently from the Wirral.

A country produce fair was canceled due to H&S inspectors claiming that the ground was to soft, and that "in the event of a major incident, the emergency services would have difficulty in accessing the site".

Aha, what SORT of major incident can happen at a country fair/farmers market?

"Carrots start mass vegetable revolution, fifteen killed in stampede of killer potatoes"?

"Passing comet decides to visit Wirral fair"?

"Mass hysteria breaks out at Martha's cake stall in panic over the last chocolate soufflé"?

"Twenty people crushed in Heysel like scenes as crowd riot at the unfair judges decision to award this years crochet prize to Mildred Grimes"?
