Default Prescription Charges Reduced in Scotland

Charges for NHS prescriptions in Scotland were reduced to £5 from today, as part of the plan to abolish them completely by 2011.

Prescription pre-payment certificates also came down in price to £48 per year instead of £98.

I use the pre-payment and pay the £98, but it still saves me a whole lot. I have to wonder if we stopped subsidising Scotland to the extent we do, we might get free prescriptions too. The whole system is very unfair.

No doubt you can get crack, speed, Charlie, angel dust, Skunk, all on prescription. Oh, and I forgot mars bars in deep fried batter as well.

Hunky? Well thank you, ma'am

I pre-pay too and am looking forward to the reduced fee, being one of only the 10% or so that don't get free prescriptions.

Remember that Wales abolished prescription charges some while back.

Fried Mars bars are so passe. It's deep-fried pizza now.

Who exactly is financing this I wonder? Honestly, if Scotland and England do go their seperate ways I am claiming duel nationality and going up north for everything. I would save a fortune even with the travelling on top.

It does seem a bit bizarre that both Scotland and Wales made this a priority whereas Westminster seem to have disregarded it.

I know Scotland has only a tenth of the population of the UK but it would be interesting to see what percentage of prescriptions issued in England are actually paid for.

The UK taxpayer, of course, and I got a letter from those nice people at the NHS Scotland today telling me they are going to send me a cheque for £12-something as a refund on the remaining 3 months of my current pre-payment certificate.
