Wholeheartedly agree. A neighbour used to be a matron and was one of the last. Problem now is that they don't have anyone with the training and years of experience in proper people management to carry on what they used to do. These women were positively fearsome, even doctors knew when to come and when to F.O.

Any one know WHY, and when they did away with the matron position?`(As opposed to the Missionary position which is PROBABLY off topic.)

Most people are, shall we say, respectful of Matrons, because they remind people of their Mum's and Grandma's. Both of whom could fix you with a stare and scare the hell out of you.
