Cool Robert Mugabe henchmen backed by Barclays

Barclays is flouting European Union sanctions on Zimbabwe by providing two of President Robert Mugabe’s most senior henchmen with bank accounts.
Both men are named on an EU blacklist that compels European-based financial institutions to freeze their bank accounts and have no dealings with them.
Barclays has been able to get around the sanctions by persuading the UK Treasury that the rules do not apply to its 67%-owned Zimbabwean subsidiary because it was incorporated outside the EU.
The two henchmen have been heavily involved in the regime’s crackdown, which in effect fixed Friday’s presidential election in favour of Mugabe. They are Elliot Manyika, minister without portfolio, who is a key figure in the recent violence, and Nicholas Goche, minister of public service, who is said to have masterminded attacks on white farmers.

You make your bed, you lay in it.

They can not complain later because some one finds a loop hole. They should have thought of it earlier.

Doesn't surprise me in the least. Most of the big bank names are into dodgey stuff behind the scenes... That's the point that the co-op bank is trying to make in their adverts, just without naming names...

they have been in Zimbabwe for yonks and why would they not support a corrupt regime that keeps them happy and earning big bucks.
Since when have main commercial banks ethical, maybe the co-op is an exception to the rule I hope it my be.

Like there's no 'brass' in Africa? I am getting a bit tired of hearing, "If there was oil there, things would be different".

The whole damn continent is stuffed full of gold and diamonds. But do the Africans dig 'em out? Nope, too much like hard work.
