I think he is stupid and chicken. This was done by thousands of small groups and individuals in the 70s doing the hippy trail. You just was up in bars and cafes to get food and hitch rides. Not sure what he was expecting.

You got to remember Poppy, the world has become a LOT more cynical since the 70s. (EXCEPT for me that is). Even in the last ten years. in 2000 when some one came on the train selling the German equivalent of the big issue, I would buy one.

But NOW, EVERY bloody station some one gets on doing the same. To say nothing of the filthy little bastards with badly spelled hand written cards telling you they are "poor tinks (Pikeys) from Bulgaria".

So this guy was "just another one of "them"".

I have to agree with you Von I understand he didn't intend finding work, but just panhandling. His theory of living without money only worked as long as some one else earned some and just handed it over to him. Total hypocrite.
