Which merely serves to prove my point, that if you have the money to throw at it you CAN end up with an excellent school.

The mistake in the U.K is to get BROWN to throw money at it.

Whilst private and faith schools are choosing to invest the money wisely, on GOOD teachers and equipment/books, as would a stock broker, BROWN has chosen to play the "penny falls" at Blackpool.

I agree Von, private and faith schools do tend to manage their resources better. The other difference with private schools is that because the parents are physically paying the kids have more pressure on them to perform. Also, if they misbehave the parents seem more inclined to back the teachers up by telling the kids off themselves. Things certainly change once you have to dig into your own pocket for it.

I have noticed that the kids in the local christian schools are much more polite and better behaved. But on the other hand, the kids in my state school in the middle of Stratford were far nicer and more respectful than the kids in the state school in Chigwell I did my A levels at (that had better results and a much better reputation). I was physically shocked by the behaviour and attitudes of both the staff AND kids. I saw kids slamming doors on teachers and a teacher reducing an 11 year old to tears after he was backed into a corner and screamed at for having his tie done up incorrectly; that was all on the induction day. A two way lack of respect.

Ultimately I think it comes down to attitudes. Only a handful of girls from my secondary school went on to get degrees (we were an exceptionally gifted year). There was a time when I thought I would never be able to afford university, let alone complete a degree AND get an offer from Cambridge. The fact is, I had a decent attitude to education and knew that it was my route to a better quality of life than most of the people around me ended up with. That was down to parenting, with a little help from my pretty supportive teachers.

Getting back to the point, I think I have a far better knowledge base and am far more open to new people, places, opportunities etc. because I grew up in a very mixed and open environment, both at home and school. I do accept that faith schools tend to have a better handle on discipline, but there is no reason that cannot be extended to mixed faith schools. At least their shouldn't be.

Unfortunately, our government has 'educational apartheid' issues.

It's now the kids that run schools and not the teachers. I personally think a little national service would sort most of them out. Certianly teach them some discipline.

1) National service starts at 18. How is THAT going to help teachers?

2)What age would YOU have NS start? 16? 14? 10? 7?

Because THAT is the ONLY way National service would help, SCHOOL discipline.

3) Have the armed forces not got enough to do without being the nurse maids for Browns failed generation?

Some smart arse Tory MP suggested this during the 'Major' years. A senior army official at that time said most of the chav applicants wouldn't pass a medical let alone be 'good enough' (I think he used the phrase, 'the right material') to join the armed forces. So this would neither provide a cure for crime nor unemployment as most of them would be booted out in the first week if not the first day.

Said around the old site about my old R.S.M at a reunion once.

"This bloody shower nowdays. They have never been bloody SHOUTED at before, let alone met some REAL bloody DISCIPLINE. FUCK, if the Taliban only knew, all they have to do is shout "Go home you bad boy or I will send you to the naughty step", and the bloody British army would fall down in tears."

No discipline, too fat, too stupid, too drugged, too pissed.

What my RSM was on about?

Aye, todays recruits. We had a fall out rate of 5 to 10%. 10 and their was an inquiry. NOW the fall out between recruiting office and regiment is approaching 60 to 70%!!! BASICALLY because they can not take been SHOUTED AT!!!

Those that are too fat, to pissed etc?

Those pratts that WOULD be soldiers, or at least SUPOSSED to be soldiers, if there was ever conscription again. And even a lot of those that never make it past the first visit to the forces carreers office now.

I always thought sending them off for the summer break in between school years from about 13/14 with the TA at least would teach them all a thing or two. National Service for 18 year olds would still be very welcome.
