Default 'Shake-up' for internet proposed

The net could see its biggest transformation in decades if plans to open up the address system are passed.
The net's regulators will vote on Thursday to decide if the strict rules on so-called top level domain names, such as .com or .uk, can be relaxed.
If approved, it could allow companies to turn their brands into domain names while individuals could also carve out their own corner of the net.
The move could also see the launch of .xxx, after years of wrangling.
Top level domains are currently limited to individual countries, such as .uk (UK) or .it (Italy), as well as to commerce, .com, and to institutional organisations, such as .net, or .org.
To get around the restrictions, some companies have used the current system to their own ends.
For example, the Polynesia island nation Tuvalu, has leased the use of the .tv address to many television firms. The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (Icann), which acts as a sort of regulator for the net as well as overseeing the domain name system, has been working towards opening up net addresses for the last three years.

Could be confusing I think. At least now, you can take an educated guess at a web address.

AND the fact that I can not play all my old games, like "Heimdallr" and early versions of "War craft" etc on my computer. Because, although it is a dinasaur, the "old" games are not suported.

AND, a PERFECT example right NOW, My blöoody spell checjker is not compatible with the new Firefux!!!!

BASTARDS!!!!

Why could they not make ALL previous systems compatible?

More TLDs means more domain names available. Never mind that most people who buy one, buy all they can afford with the same subdomain part (e.g. AAA.com, AAA.net, AAA.co.uk, etc....). It's all just about money. The internet ceased to be about people, research or creating something special a long time ago, it's just turned into one big, stinky, advert riddled hell hole. Pretty much like TV really...

Reminds me of the launch of the Tuvalu GTLD (Formerly known as the Ellice Islands) - .TV, total population 3 people, and one wort hog (ok, about 12,000 people). They sold the entire domain to a US company who now sells .TV domains for the highest price of any domain name on the net - And not one is owned by anyone on the islands...
