Travellers using airports in New York and Los Angeles could be scanned by hi-tech machines that see through their clothing.
The scanners use 'millimeter wave imaging' which allows security staff to check travellers without a physical 'pat-down'.
The advanced machines can also see through travellers' clothing.
Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)and JFK International Airport in New York are set to install the scanners following the ongoing trial of similar machines at Phoenix International Airport.
At LAX, passengers will be randomly chosen to try the machine but can refuse and ask for a 'pat-down' instead.
Travellers waiting to be checked at JFK will be able to opt out of being scanned by the technology.
The US government has said 90 per cent of travellers chose the scanner over being physically searched during the trial in Phoenix.
To protect passengers' privacy, security officers will view the images in a different location and they will not be saved. Travellers' faces will also be blurred.
The same techonology was tested at Paddington Station last year but no decision has been made as yet regarding a roll-out of the scanners in the UK.
