The BBC has axed Grange Hill, the groundbreaking children’s series which shocked viewers with its representation of life in a comprehensive, after 30 years.
Anne Gilchrist, the Controller of CBBC, announced the move and promised that the BBC would find a new way of presenting social realism in children’s drama.
Notorious for its depictions of underage pregnancy, drugs and racism, Phil Redmond, series creator had criticised a BBC plan to “soften” the show, by introducing younger pupils and moving the setting to a “multimedia technology college”.
