From the tax on earnings and spending of more people actually living longer free from heart and lung disease.

Plus there'd be less demand on the resources of the NHS and Sickness Benefit.

Face it - smoking kills.

At least alcohol can have some beneficial effects.

What causes cancer of the larynx?

Some people develop cancer of the larynx for no apparent reason. However, certain 'risk factors' increase the chance that cancer of the larynx may develop. These include:
1) Ageing. It is more common in older people. Most cases are in people over 60.
2) Smoking. The damaging smoke passes through the larynx to get to the lungs.
3) Drinking a lot of alcohol, especially spirits.
4) A poor diet may be a risk factor, especially a diet lacking certain vitamins and minerals.
5) Long-term exposure to certain chemicals, fumes or pollutants may 'irritate' the larynx if you breathe them in and may increase the risk.
6) Human papilloma virus (HPV) has been shown in some studies to be associated with cancer of the larynx.

From the link given, it seems alcohol ranks as No.3 possible risk factor - and even then if its in the form of spirits and drunk a lot. Aging and smoking appear to be greater factors.

Poor old Alex Higgins certainly ticked the first three boxes.
