If some comes in and marries for the right to stay then lets see how can it be made unattractive to do so unless genuine. There are too many marriages of convenience so here are a few ideas that can be expanded on. It will apply to men as well as women as both try there luck
0 - 5 years: The resident must support the non resident with no help from the benefits system 5 - 10 years: The non resident can can work but if they lose there job will get minimal benefits system support. The main support will again be the resident spouse. 10 -15 years: The non resident if they lose there job can claim benefits. Apply for permission to stay providing they meet the criteria; a: no convictions of any kind. b: they swear an oath to this country. c: they accept it will be a probationary 5 year period. 15 - 20 years The non resident completes the the probationary period as required and takes the oath. They can also after taking the be allowed to enter public office. 20 + years After the oath is taken then they are a resident but with certain constraints. A divorce* can be applied for but the spouse that was was the original resident gets the majority of what is/was the marriage. This is to cover any costs incurred through the process. The original non resident will still get any pension they are entitled to but must fund the divorce cost themselves no legal aid of any kind. Only after this period will the original non resident be able to claim on the estate if the original resident dies. If death occurs prior to this the estate goes to any children** and extended family. As the death is beyond the control of the original non resident they may be allowed to stay if they can prove they are contributing to the economy and taking nothing out of it beyond the limit of their entitlement. The original non resident cannot force the original resident to change faith to suite their beliefs. Any attempt would result in forefit of the right to stay. The original resident keeps their faith and any attempt to do so must be proven to be of their own choosing and desire and not influenced from anywere. A passport will be issued but can be removed at any time. Any travelling abroad prior to this will not be allowed only under special circumstances and then alone on a temporary passport. Foot note * If the original non resident files for divorce prior to the oath taking then are to be returned to the land of their birth with minimal belongings money etc. Any children of the marriage will remain in this country with the resident parent. ** Children born inside the marriage will not give an automatic reason to stay or become resident even if the 20 year+ stipulations are met. I know its heavy for a Sunday morning but this whole carry on was bugging me last night. I will collect my as and when required.

Sarkozy (sp?) has just called for France to withdraw citizenship for ANY foreigner who commits an offence. REGARDLESS how "minor" that offence is.
We have similar here. But not AFTER they have obtained citizenship, unfortunately. A sham marriage would be a PERFECT example of when this should be done. No matter HOW long after they are found out.
